Set up your WLED LEDs, from box to glow.

Never touched an addressable LED before? Perfect, this is written for you. Four steps take you from an unopened dig2go to colour on your wall, plus a couple of optional extras once you've got the bug.

First, the two-minute version

Three terms, quickly explained.

What is WLED?

WLED is free, open-source firmware that turns a small ESP32 chip into a Wi-Fi LED controller. You drive it from a web page or the free WLED app: hundreds of effects, colours, presets and schedules, with no coding and no cloud account. The dig2go ships with WLED already installed and configured.

What is an addressable LED controller?

It's the little computer that tells every LED in a strip what colour to be, many times a second. Addressable strips can't do anything on their own; the controller generates the data signal that turns a dumb strip into moving gradients, chases and animations.

And WS2812B / SK6812?

The two most common kinds of 5V addressable LED strip. WS2812B mixes red, green and blue in every pixel; SK6812 RGBW adds a dedicated white LED for cleaner everyday white. The dig2go drives both, plus WS2811 and most other 5V addressable pixels.

Step by step

Set up your dig2go in four steps

Power it up

Plug a USB-C cable into the dig2go and into any 5V USB power source: a phone charger, a laptop port, or a power bank. It's standard USB-C, the same as a modern phone.

A small green light on the dig2go means it has power and is ready. That's the only "on" you need.

Tip: for a full strip at full brightness, use an adapter that can give around 3A (15W). A weak charger still works, your lights will just cap their brightness to stay safe. Use a cable rated for 3A.

Connect your LED strip

Click your addressable strip onto the pigtail that came in the box. The connector only fits one way. The dig2go drives 5V strips: WS2812B, SK6812 (RGB and RGBW) and WS2811.

With power on, the strip should light up a gentle orange straight away. That's WLED saying hello, and it means you're connected.

Two things to get right: the strip's little arrows must point away from the dig2go (data flows one direction), and it must be a 5V strip, not 12V or 24V.

Join the dig2go's Wi-Fi

The dig2go makes its own Wi-Fi network the first time. On your phone or laptop, open Wi-Fi settings and connect to WLED-AP (it may be named QuinLED-AP) using the password wled1234.

A setup page usually pops up on its own. If it doesn't, open a browser and go to 4.3.2.1. You can start changing colours right here, or, to use it on your normal network, open Config → WiFi Setup, enter your home Wi-Fi, and save. The dig2go reboots and joins it.

Heads-up: the dig2go uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, not 5GHz. Almost every router has both, so just pick the 2.4GHz one. After it joins your network, find it again via the WLED app or your router's device list.

Make it yours in WLED

Use the free WLED app (Android / iOS) or just a web browser. Two quick settings make everything look right.

LED count: in Config → LED Preferences, set the number of LEDs to match your strip, so the whole thing lights up. Colour order: if you pick green and get red, switch the colour order (RGB or GRB) on the same page. Running an RGBW strip like SK6812? Set the strip type to RGBW there too.

Now the fun part: tap through the effects and palettes, save your favourites as presets, and set a brightness you like. You're done, that's a working addressable LED setup.

Optional: make it dance to music

The dig2go has a microphone built in, so it can pulse along with sound. In WLED, open Config → Usermods and enable AudioReactive. Save, then choose a sound-reactive effect (they're grouped together in the effects list).

If it's too twitchy or too sleepy, adjust two things in the AudioReactive settings: squelch (ignores background noise) and gain (how strongly it reacts). A little tuning and it'll move beautifully with whatever's playing.

Optional: tinker & expand

Ready for more? The side of the dig2go breaks out spare pins: switched 5V and 3.3V, ground, four GPIOs and I²C. You can wire in a physical button, a sensor, or your own gadget. There's also an IR receiver, so a cheap remote can drive it with no phone at all.

Hit a snag?

The usual first-timer fixes.

  • Nothing lights up? Check the green power light, that the strip's arrows point away from the dig2go, and that WLED is set to the right strip type.
  • Only part of the strip lights? Set the correct LED count in Config then LED Preferences.
  • Colours look wrong? Change the colour order (RGB or GRB), and set RGBW if you have an SK6812 strip, on the same settings page.
